On November, 27th and March, 11th the classes R 8a and R 8b of the Diesterwegschule and their teacher Mrs. Haberstroh visited SurTec in Zwingenberg. The contact between Mrs. Haberstroh and SurTec was made on August, 27th 2001 at an Open-Space-Conference at the Merck KGaA in Darmstadt. There the theme was “Bildungspartnerschaft Wirtschaft und Schulen“ (Education partnership between economy and schools), led by Unternehmensverband Südhessen e.V. The aim of this conference was to eliminate the weak points in school and training by teacher and economists in order to strenghten the workcrafts.

Interesting experiments

To strength the interest in chemistry, several experiments were shown, as the influence of ultrasound. This was demonstrated by aluminium foil where holes were made in by ultrasound.

Old copper-pennies were cleaned and the corroision prevention of a polymer-layer was shown.

After pickling tests on aluminium, the occured hydrogen was proved by the detonation gas test.

In a small laboratory cell the class was shown how a galvanic zincing operates. Afterwards they chromated already zinced steel parts in yellow, blue and black.

They have also been showed how metallic zinc can be disolved in an alcalic solution with help of a catalysator.

With the AAS (atom absorption spectroscopy) a zinc determination was made, as well as the valuation of the meassuring was discussed and explained.
